First, collect all the necessary forms mailed
to you in order to prepare your tax return. These
include: Any income forms (W2, 1099-INT, SSA-1099, etc.),
any and all 1095-A forms (from your Marketplace), and any other relevant forms
mailed to you and/or your spouse. If married, you will most likely file as "married, filing jointly".
Second, you may want to read the IRS publication instructions for Form 8962, especially if you plan on doing your own taxes. However, even if you have "manually" done your taxes in the distant past, you may find that the terminology and some wording in the 8962 instructions to be both confusing and even contradictory. Unfortunately, you don't have the time to futz around with this.
Therefore, we recommend that you either use "free" e-file software on the IRS web-site (if you qualify), or purchase one.
We highly recommend the Intuit Turbo Tax software. It spells out everything! And, it even helps with those questions you will most likely have with some of the IRS instructions for Form 8962.
This software does everything, and I mean everything! It asks all the pertinent questions, does all the calculations, has verification steps, electronically files with both the federal and state agencies, allows you to make any necessary payments [or refunds] on-line, does all of this securely, and lastly, provides you with a PDF copy of all submitted [and completed] tax forms - both federal and state! It also keeps you posted of every step.
Honestly, the Intuit Turbo Tax software and it's interface is so well done, we give it the highest ratings! (Hit the Facebook Share Button above to share with family and friends!)
